From the Principal
We are all called to love our neighbour.
Who are our neighbours? Neighbours, by definition, are people living next door or close to us. We also talk of neighbouring countries, where borders are shared.
Sometimes neighbours are like us, and we treat them as friends, helping each other, spending time together and getting along fine. We like these neighbours because we connect, and our conversations help us to understand if they are having a good day or not. It’s easy to show empathy towards these kinds of neighbours.
Sometimes neighbours are not like us, and we treat them as foes, ignoring, complaining about them and not getting along. We don’t like these neighbours because we don’t get along, and our lack of connection stops us from understanding if they are having a good day or not. We find it difficult to show empathy towards these kinds of neighbours.
The Bible tells a story of when Jesus told the people to love their neighbour. One man asked whether he could choose who would be his neighbour. But Jesus didn’t differentiate between friend or foe. He told the story of the Good Samaritan to help us understand that in God’s eyes everyone is a neighbour, and we are to work at loving everyone.
Neighbours are people, just like you and me. Just like me, they make good and bad choices. Just like me, they long for acceptance and love. Just like me, they deserve to be treated with respect and empathy.
What a wonderful place our world be, if we lived with, and loved, everyone as neighbours. (Jesus said:)
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.”
In Week 6 we will celebrate Book Week with our Book Character Parade to be held on Wednesday 22nd August where children come to school dressed as a book character. During the Parade, the children will explain the book from where their character came. Following the Parade is the Book Fair, where students can purchase some wonderful books from a travelling Scholastic book display.
Help needed. We need some parents who will work with Mrs Scherpenzeel at the Book Fair, particularly in collecting the money for purchased books at the Book Fair (Wed 22nd Aug). If you are available, please let Mrs Scherpenzeel know.
You may have heard that NAPLAN Online was introduced in 2018, with 274 Western Australian schools participating. Our school will be transitioning to NAPLAN Online in 2019.
NAPLAN online will provide better assessment, more precise results and faster turnaround of information. Your child’s results will be returned to the school faster, within a few weeks rather than a few months.
Mrs Catchpole and I attended a training session last week, to learn how to best prepare for a trial. This trial, called the School Readiness Test (SRT), will enable us to assess our technical readiness to implement the new online assessments. In addition it will gives us a chance to try out the new national online assessment platform in a real-life classroom environment.
During [August or September 2018], all ACCDD students in Years 3 and 5 will participate in a trial of the assessment platform, by undertaking online readiness tests that include examples of the new NAPLAN online questions. Each test will take about 45 minutes to complete.
Participating in this trial is important as it will help us ensure we have adequate internet connectivity, and whether students have access to sufficient number of devices for NAPLAN Online testing. During the trial, our teachers will have the opportunity to practice managing the classroom logistics for an online assessment and the new test administration processes.
Your child will not need to prepare anything. The readiness test has not been constructed to assess curriculum knowledge, but rather to provide students with an opportunity to experience the types of questions that will be included in the new online assessments. As such, reports will not be provided. Participation in the SRT is a key step to ensuring a successful NAPLAN online experience in 2019 for us.
Fun at ACC
This week we had a lot to be excited about:
Shirley from Armadale Library came to present the Kindy children with a lovely book. She encouraged the children to utilise their local library.
A team from Perform Education came to present a musical created to celebrate the Children’s Book Council Australia’s (CBCA) Book Week 2018 shortlist and the CBCA theme 'Find Your Treasure'. The children and teachers loved being part of the musical and were really impressed with the talented presenters. The children were also keen to read the books that had been highlighted.
This incursion combined elements of percussion, juggling and comedy for our P-6 students. The children were an integral part of the interactive performance. It featured a wide range of traditional and found percussion instruments, with a focus on creating incredible music with simple and common instruments and objects, and demonstrated how easily students can make music with things in their own environment.
The P and F will be having a Sausage Sizzle at the School Athletics Carnival on Friday, 7th September. Purchases can be made on the day and we will be sending out order sheets for the children before the date. The children will be able to purchase a fruit juice orbottled waterwith a sausage sizzle for $3. Please return the slip with the order and monies to the school by the 4th of September. We will see you then!”
The next P&F meeting will be held on Monday 27th August at 6:00pm. We will be discussing preparations for the Sausage Sizzle. All parents are welcome to attend.
Childminding will be available, however, please email Joan at [email protected] to book a place.
Enrolments for 2019
This is the time of the year when we begin to plan for the staffing and resources we will need to achieve maximum learning in 2019. Places are filling up fast, and we are excited about our continued growth, and hope you are too.
If you have a family member, friend, neighbour or colleague who has Primary aged children who would benefit from joining our incredible learning community, let them know we are now open for 2019 enrolments.
Bring them in to meet Mrs Burrage, who will be happy to show them around.
ACC Playgroup is for children 0-4 years old. Feel free to let your friends and neighbours know they are invited. The ACC Playgroup meets every Tuesday morning 9:00am -10:30am. Mrs Watson, our Music specialist, runs a session at 9:00am - it’s not to be missed! There are crafts and fun activities for the children, and opportunities to get to know other families.
